Undyed Roving to Colorful Yarn!

Hello! I’ve completed the large dye project I had planned this week earlier than expected, so I get to share my findings earlier too! To make this happen, I used the general dharma tutorial for color pooling/painting dye method. As of chemicals I used dharma acid dye (uv and non uv reactive), vinegar (or citric acid), and dye fixate (synthrapol). For the tools I used latex gloves, N95 mask, a pot, a microwave, measuring spoons, press and seal, rubber bands, black plastic table covering, a drying rack, squeeze bottles, and a bucket. It’s quite the process, but luckily there are some breaks between when things are cooling to get most everything cleaned up as you’re going. From start to finish it takes about 3 days for the process to be completed, including the presoak of the fiber and the drying time. Overall, this process of hand dying roving and yarn has been a blast for me. Getting to challenge myself with color theory was the best part in my opinion. Color is always interesting, but figuring out what schemes go well together, what type of scheme to use, how to spin the roving so it doesn’t muddy the colors, pre drafting the fiber according to the color palette, and finally making sure everything doesn’t turn brown is a very engaging challenge. I played it very safe with the colors I chose this first time, but I can’t wait to try some more difficult palettes here soon. Well, that’s all I have for this post. Bye for now :).

Sass served with every stitch ;)

  1. I love those colors!! The roving looks like beautiful cotton candy. Then to spin annd coordinate the fiber and come out with colors that look so good together is beyond what my color challenged brain can comprehend. I love watching what you create. -M
